UK Visa Types for Pakistani and South Asian Applicants

The UK visa system is route-based: the right application depends on why you are travelling, how long you plan to stay, who is sponsoring you, and whether you will work or study. Start by matching your real purpose to the route before you pay any fee or book a visa application centre appointment.

Quick checklist

  • Choose the visa route by purpose: visit, study, work, family or settlement.
  • Check if the route requires a UK sponsor, such as a university, employer or family member.
  • Confirm the earliest date you can apply before your travel, course or job start date.
  • Budget for the visa fee, possible priority fee and immigration health surcharge where it applies.
  • Prepare evidence that directly supports the route, not a generic document pile.
  • Create or keep access to your UKVI account because UK status is now mostly digital.

Visit, study and work routes

Short visits usually use the Standard Visitor route, which can cover tourism, family visits, business meetings and courses of up to six months, but it does not allow ordinary paid work in the UK. Longer academic study normally uses the Student visa with a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies from a licensed sponsor. Skilled work normally uses the Skilled Worker visa, which needs an approved employer, a Certificate of Sponsorship, an eligible occupation code and a salary that meets the current route rules.

Family, Graduate and specialist routes

Family visas are for people joining a partner, parent, child or other eligible family member who has the required UK status and can meet the route conditions. The Graduate visa is a post-study option for eligible students who successfully complete a UK degree or eligible course. Specialist routes such as Global Talent, Innovator Founder, Health and Care Worker and Religious Worker have narrower requirements and should be checked against the official route page before assuming eligibility.

Why the route choice matters

A visa refusal often starts with the wrong route or inconsistent purpose: for example, applying as a visitor while planning to work, or applying as a student before the CAS and funds are ready. UKVI decisions are document-led, so the application should tell one consistent story across the form, travel history, sponsor evidence, finances and intended dates.

Common questions

Visa Types FAQs

Can a UK visitor visa be used for work?

No. A Standard Visitor can do permitted visitor activities such as tourism, family visits, some business meetings and short study, but ordinary employment or running a UK business is not allowed. Use a work route if the real purpose is employment.

Which UK visa is best for students?

A Student visa is the usual route for a degree or longer sponsored course. A Standard Visitor can cover study of up to six months, and the Short-term study route is specifically for English language courses longer than six months but not more than eleven months.

Do Pakistani citizens need a visa to visit the UK?

Pakistani citizens generally need to apply for the correct UK visa before travel. Always use the GOV.UK visa checker for your nationality and purpose before booking flights.
