UK Student Visa Guide: CAS, Funds and Dependants

A UK Student visa depends on a licensed education sponsor issuing a CAS and on financial evidence that meets exact UKVI rules. The strongest applications are prepared backwards from the CAS, course start date and required funds.

Quick checklist

  • Get an unconditional offer and CAS from a licensed student sponsor.
  • Apply up to six months before the course starts if applying from outside the UK.
  • Prepare tuition fee evidence and living-cost funds for London or outside London.
  • Check whether your funds must be held for the required period before application.
  • Complete tuberculosis testing if your country and stay length require it.
  • Budget for the Student visa fee and the immigration health surcharge.
  • Confirm whether dependants are allowed for your course type before planning family travel.

CAS and timing

The Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies is the anchor document for the Student visa. It identifies the institution, course, fees paid and sponsor details. Applicants outside the UK can usually apply up to six months before the course starts, and should leave time for bank documentation, tuberculosis testing where required, biometrics and possible follow-up checks.

Money requirement

UKVI sets separate maintenance levels for study in London and outside London, in addition to tuition fees. As of the latest GOV.UK guidance checked on 22 July 2026, students need GBP 1,529 per month in London or GBP 1,171 per month outside London, for up to nine months, unless an exemption applies. Dependants, where permitted, have their own monthly requirement.

Work rights and dependants

Student work rights depend on course level, sponsor type and what the eVisa or decision letter states. Do not rely on advice from friends if your own permission is different. Dependant rules are narrower than they used to be, so confirm eligibility before budgeting for a spouse or children to travel with you.

Common questions

Student Visa FAQs

When can I apply for a UK Student visa from Pakistan?

You can usually apply from outside the UK up to six months before the course start date listed on your CAS. Apply early enough to complete biometrics and any document checks before enrolment deadlines.

How much money do I need for a UK Student visa?

The amount depends on tuition fees, what you have already paid, where you study and whether dependants are included. GOV.UK currently lists monthly living-cost figures of GBP 1,529 for London and GBP 1,171 outside London, for up to nine months, unless you are exempt.

Can UK Student visa holders work?

Many Student visa holders can work limited hours during term and full-time in vacations, but the exact permission depends on the course and sponsor. Check the conditions shown in your UKVI account and decision notice before accepting any job.
