The CIR integration contract
Most people granted residence in France for settlement purposes sign a Contrat d'Integration Republicaine (CIR) with OFII, the immigration office. It includes civic training on French institutions and values, a language assessment, and prescribed French courses if your level is below the required threshold. Completing CIR obligations is checked when you request a multi-year card, so keep every attendance certificate. Students and some temporary categories are exempt, but lose nothing by learning the system early.
